New Bible bookshop for Egypt’s pyramid district

Ramez Atallah

Amid the upheaval and uncertainty in Egypt, the Bible Society there continues to find new ways to reach as many people as possible with God’s Word. Last week it opened a Bible bookshop in Giza – a suburb of Greater Cairo and the location of some of Egypt’s most famous monuments. Ramez Atallah, who leads the Bible Society, describes his hopes for the new shop.

The future of Egypt hangs in the balance. In light of the uncertain political climate there is an urgency to do everything possible to ensure the ongoing presence of Bible work. This new bookshop will bring the precious treasure of God’s Word to this community living at the foot of the pyramids!

The Giza Bible bookshop.

About seven million people live in Giza. Its Christians are served by around 150 churches, some of which have their own small bookshops. But, until now, there has not been a single public Christian bookshop in Giza visible and accessible to passers-by. In Egypt, Bible bookshops are one of the few places unchurched people can go to find out more about the Bible.

Accessible to all!

Now, as they go about their daily lives, the people of Giza will see their Bible bookshop, which is located on a busy street near the railway station and Cairo University. The unchanging message of truth and hope will literally be available on the streets of Giza, affordable and accessible to all!

Bassem, Youssef and Hany work in the Giza bookshop.

We are so grateful for all those who have partnered with us in prayer and giving, enabling us to purchase and renovate the property. The entrance has been designed to be open and welcoming, and our staff there – Bassem, Youssef and Hany – are eager and ready to help customers and enquirers.

Shining the Bible’s light

Please pray that this bookshop is a blessing to Giza, shining the Bible’s light and encouragement to many who are in need of it.

“So we are even more confident of the message proclaimed by the prophets. You will do well to pay attention to it, because it is like a lamp shining in a dark place until the Day dawns and the light of the morning star shines in your hearts.” 2 Peter 1:19 (GNT)

(There are 14 Bible bookshops in Egypt, located in Alexandria, the Delta Region, Cairo/Giza, and Upper Egypt. The Bible Society is looking into establishing a presence in a variety of retail outlets, such as secular bookshops, stationery shops and supermarkets.)
