‘My country is so proud of this calendar!’ says Bible Society of Costa Rica General Secretary Mayra Ugalde. When they first produced a combined print and Braille calendar, Bible Society staff in Costa Rica could not have dreamt that one day it would take its place in the National Library, which is responsible for storing all the country’s most important documents.
The calendar, which features Bible verses and photos of natural scenes, is designed to promote unity within the families of visually impaired people and to help them become integrated into society. All family members, both visually impaired and sighted, can enjoy the calendar together. It was thanks the Society’s active promotion of the calendar on social media that the National Library came to learn of its existence. Recognising it as a significant product, the National Library requested several copies for inclusion in its legal depository.
‘This is such an honour for us,’ says Ms Ugalde. ‘We praise God that the calendar has now been designated part of our country’s national heritage. We also rejoice that our other products will now have a greater impact: when Laura Rodríguez, Director of the National Library, received the calendars, she expressed her interest in the work of the Bible Society and requested copies of all the materials we have produced to promote cultural and spiritual values.’
This calendar is really beautiful
In the months since the calendar was launched, the Bible Society has been receiving a stream of excited, positive responses. ‘It’s a sign that this product is really meeting a need,’ continues Ms Ugalde.
Nayuribe Monge, a special education teacher for the visually impaired, told the Society, ‘I have a student with low vision. Both her parents are blind. This calendar will be very helpful, since it is something they will be able to share, something that will be useful both for her and her mother. Usually when we receive printed materials, we have to adapt them, and we can never make them look as good as this calendar.’
Roberto Sancho is a journalist who has a visual impairment. He said, ‘This calendar is really beautiful. I have seen some calendars made in other countries, but this is the best one I have had. It is truly accessible and also, it breaks away from the idea of a blind person as someone to be pitied. Congratulations to the Bible Society.’
