In the Orthodox tradition there are lots of icons on different biblical stories and some themes of these icons repeat (the Holy Nativity, Jesus’s Baptism, Crucixion, Resurrection, etc.). There is one particular icon that especially touches me. It represents the New Testament story of when Jesus calms a storm in Mark 4:35-41.
For me, the lake is the world and we are on the boat of life. The world is always in a storm: wars, migrations, natural disasters, crises. And what do we do? What do countries do for their salvation? Instead of believing that God is with us, instead of praying and hoping for salvation of the world, the leaders of countries keep on fighting.
We are busy with our lives, we are involved in different activities and often we forget that the Lord is with us. When the storm starts, we become panic-stricken and we are in a hurry to wake up the Lord. But there is no need to wake him up, because he isn’t asleep, He will not let us be destroyed! What did he say to his disciples? “Why are you frightened? Do you still have no faith?”
Let us always keep our faith strong, praying and remembering that the Lord is with us at all times, wherever we are.
