This month we are celebrating literacy at United Bible Societies. Did you know that entire 12 percent of the world’s population are considered functionally illiterate, with only basic or below-basic literacy levels in their native languages. Many would love to read a Bible, but do not know how. It is grotesque to be on the other end of the spectrum when we know what sound each letter of the alphabet makes, know how to read and have an access to the Bible, yet we fail to use it.
Dusty unread Bibles are a real concern in the world — people have questions and problems, yet they do not turn to the Book where God gives answers applicable to their issues. They miss out on a rich world of God’s advice to men.
Biblical literacy begins with how we approach the Word of God. Would you take time today to read your Bible? Tell God: “I am coming to you Holy Word with open heart. Talk to me afresh through this page.” What you are about to experience as a Bible reader is exciting. Spend a moment just being silent with growing expectation before picking the up book. Allow your own thoughts to quiet. As you then begin to read remember quantity does not matter. Resist the temptation of measuring effectiveness of you time with the number of verses or chapters ploughed through.
Instead the full presence of your mind in reading the Bible is needed. When something remains unclear ask questions to God in prayer. Most importantly, as you understand what the God meant in the text reflect how to apply in your life in practical terms. Do you feel what God feels in that passage? Receive what you read and submit to the will of God. As Francis Chan said, impossible things start happening when you get alone with your Bible!
